s2d2 was originally a Web interface testing ground for AKGold Internet. It combined two of Andrew's passions: innovative web technologies and outdoor adventures in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Windsurfing, mountain biking, trail running, hiking, sea kayaking, hang gliding, and more — the spirit of adventure and the incredible outdoors in the San Francisco Bay Area inspired Sunshine Daydream in 1996. I obtained the electronic rights to the book Outdoor Adventures in the San Francisco Bay Area written by author Rick Blick, a friend of mine from the San Francisco Lacrosse Club.
I started with shooting over 50 QuickTime VR (QTVR) panoramic shots around San Francisco, then with the help of local artists, photographers, and adventurers brought the site to life and launched it.
In addition, I coded the majority of the site's script and technical features such as the online postcards, message boards, classified section, and the search engine. Sunshine Daydream was a good way for me to test new technologies, while creating an exciting site for Web users seeking adventure.
For those who remember, Sunshine Daydream was one of the first sites to be listed in Yahoo! and it had the cool glasses beside the name. A lot has changed since then.
As the main site designer, information architect, programmer and producer, my job was to make the site easy to navigate, engaging and clear and to provide a framework for all the great content from the creation team. The real fun of Sunshine Daydream was the involvement of the outdoor adventure community who engaged in the chat rooms, posted equipment for sale and sent online postcards to family and friends.
